Dependence on cellphones

In the olden days of the bsnl landline, we had a small list of telephone numbers and we had all of them memorised. Today, a common man has around 200 contacts in his cellphone. Mine has 270 (remove the repeated ones and Hutch care & team and you are left with around 250). And the dependence on the cellphone results in a situation where we seldom remember phone nos. Why the hell does anybody need to remember them?!!! Thats what a cellphone address book is for.

But what if you get pick pocketed and loose your cellphone and (bad luck!) wallet together and that too in a new place??!!! Don't tell me that I am a big pessimist. This is what happened with a friend of mine last weekend.

He has just come to Bangalore and last Saturday was his second day here. He was on his way back to his place after meeting me and another friend when all this happened. Let me summarize the situation in his words :

bhaiyon on my 1st visit to the city bangi, i lost my wallet(ATM in tht) and my mobile.(so i cdn't contact)

kya swagat kiya hai bangi ne..........ravish and sinha ke saath kiya poora mazaa khatam ho gaya tha while returning, saala kaise kaise apne room pe pahuche

Now, if he had any of our numbers memorized, at least we could have gone to rescue him.

So, I have decided that I will commit to memory some important numbers. The list contains roommates, family, my manager at office, few friends in Bangalore.

If you have any suggestions to include in this list, you are welcome to comment.

apparently there is a way to migrate your mobile contacts to pc (and should be the other way too). though this would only be available in high end phones, i guess

agreed that this can be done; and it will help a lot; specially because building back your address book from scratch is perhaps the biggest headache; but i am talking about a scenario where you are out on the road; there having the data backed on your home/office PC is not going to help you. You need to have it in your memory.

For example, suppose you are caught up in traffic on way to a very important meeting (visualize yourself as a sales guy instead of the software expert) and you do not have your cell phone. This is a rather very probable situation; here it would really help to have your boss/colleague's number memorized.

I won't add to the list (it's already too taxing for my pea-brain :P) but I have a way to facilitate your desire to memorise these numbers : call them from your office phone, WITHOUT USING ANY SPEED DIALLING (IF AVAILABLE). I call Moiz and Sam n number of times, and the result is I can recall their numbers even in my sleep. :)

btw it just struck me: it's gonna be a tad tougher task for you, given a roommate (Laddoo) who keeps changing his number so often (for whatever reasons ;) )
